The Carnleys, Sid and Julia, first owned the farm in the 1930's.
Mr. Carnley raised cotton, corn, some cattle as well as tending
a pecan orchard, pear orchard, and vineyard. The barn was a mule
barn, and prior to ownership, the Carnleys had leased the property
in the 1920's for turpentine production.
Pauline, daughter of the Carnleys, and her husband Gilbert McGlothren
secured the farm after the Korean War. Mr. McGlothren successfully
farmed corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, and cattle as well as the
pecan orchard. A concerned environmentalist, he did extensive
terracing and earth work to arrest erosion.
Now the property, called Half Oak Ranch, is home to cattle,
horses, and an historic Atmore house, circa 1920, moved to the
farm by Dan and Shiren McGlothren. The intention was to retain
as much of the original structure as possible with necessary
features updated. Join me as we tour this classic ranch home.
The front concrete
drive lined with soldier courses of brick leads to an expansive
porch. Open the original door and enter
the foyer accented by marbleized tile with a brass and glass
light fixture. To your right is the office/home library complete
with custom cabinetry, ceiling fan, and a fireplace. The foyer
ends in the hall that leads to the rest of the house. As you
walk you will notice the light, open feeling of space and easy
traffic flow created by 10 foot ceilings throughout, 30 plus
windows - all with storms, and multiple doorways in and out of
rooms. The floors are original heart pine, doorknobs are glass,
and all trim is 6 inches on windows and doors.
Turn
down the hall to your left and pass a bedroom with a large
bay window, ceiling fan, and original beaded board ceiling.
Straight
ahead pass into the huge family room kitchen area. In the kitchen
are double built-in self cleaning ovens, a large island with
storage and a Jenn Aire cook top, dishwasher, and walk-in pantry,
all with custom cabinetry, as well as the breakfast area.
The family room has a sautillo tile traffic pattern, center
carpet, ceiling fan, and fireplace with custom cabinetry. Off
this room is the sunroom, the door to the back porch, the utility
room with washer, dryer, and freezer, and a half bath with antique
sink. Also find the doorway to another large bedroom with ceiling
fan and full bath.
Back in the kitchen pass through the swinging door into the
formal dining room highlighted with stained glass, brass chandelier,
and french doors that lead to the formal living room, complete
with ceiling fan and fireplace.
Off the living room, for privacy, is the master bedroom. A ceiling
fan and fireplace lend ambiance and as you pass into the master
bath you see matched, antique stained glass windows over a garden
tub, separate 4 foot shower, ceiling fan, his and her vanities
and large walk-in closets.
Functionally the house is zoned for heat and air with 2 Carrier
heat pumps and 2 thermostats. There are 2 water heaters and the
house is total electric. In back there is an oversized 2 car
garage, concrete patio, and concrete drive to the 7 stall shed
and 40 x 50 foot barn. The house is approximately 3450 square
feet and the property is about 100 acres, in the form of a rectangle
- which could easily be laid out for development.
